About This Course

Course Description: This compact yet comprehensive course focuses on equipping participants with essential skills in building therapeutic relationships, using empowering language, facilitating understanding, and setting effective limits with children. Through a blend of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on practice, attendees will learn how to apply these techniques to reduce challenging behaviors and create more positive interactions with children. The training also includes strategies for supporting parents in implementing these principles at home, making it an invaluable tool for professionals working in various child support roles.


Course Objectives: At the end of this training, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the core principles of Child-Centered Play Therapy and their relevance to child development and behavior management
  • Demonstrate key relationship-building skills, including empathy, unconditional positive regard, and empowering children through their play
  • Apply basic CCPT techniques such as tracking, reflecting feelings, and returning responsibility in role-play scenarios.
  •  Implement the ACT model (Acknowledge, Communicate, Target) for setting therapeutic limits effectively and consistently.
  • Explain strategies for facilitating a child's self-understanding and building self-esteem through appropriate acknowledgment and empowering language.
  • Outline methods for adapting CCPT skills to support parents in implementing these principles during home-based play sessions.

Lisa Parsons is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Supervisor (LPCC-S) and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (RPT-S) practicing in Berea, KY. Lisa is certified in the following:EMDR, AutPlay, Animal-Assisted Therapy, Hypnotherapy, and Theraplay Level One. Lisa is TF-CBT Trained with supervision and Gottman Level 2 Trained. Lisa is also the proud owner of Parsons Counseling & Play Therapy Center located in Berea, KY and Richmond, KY. Lisa specializes in working with children through adults with emphasis on attachment, trauma, and strengthening families.
